Profit over Consumer Convenience; Universitas Pelita Harapan

PROFIT OVER CONSUMER CONVENIENCE @ UNIVERSITAS PELITA HARAPAN

No space to park, more time to waste

the construction of the new swimming pool

UPH, Universitas Pelita Harapan, equipped with a variety of faculties and educational opportunities, have overloaded itself with vehicles, leaving students no space to park their vehicles and more time to waste finding convenience. Every business enterprise would want to draw more profit traffic their way, but how far would they go that they would inconvenience their own consumers

Simple logic dictates that if every car dealership zealously try to sell as much cars as possible, the city would be packed, ergo, the more students UPH attracts, and as the number of students grow (from one batch to another from each faculty, in a 30 percent increase), how packed would the location be, and how are they going to accomodate?

The latest innovation UPH has made, is UPH college, occupying the Faculty of Social and Political Science (FISIP) Building, somewhat 'evicting' the members of the FISIP family; not to mention a new swimming pool.
The swimming pool has a become more of a connundrum rather than an innovation, because it takes up a whole new space, yards and yards, and it occupies a space that used to be a student's parking space.

A new faculty + a growing massive amount of new students + swimming pool = a disastrous inconvenience

"It used to take me 5-10 minutes to find a parking spot, now it takes me 20 -25 minutes just to get a spot"
says Hansen, a student of FISIP

"I hate the fact that they are building a swimming, *****" says Evelyn P, student of Graphic Design Faculty

Random Fact... I

It is interesting how American cinema portrays Asian people....

A. In Breakfast at Tiffany's they had one asian character who was supposedly..... Chinese or Japanese, we can't even tell, because he was wearing a Japanese Robe and had a roomful of chinese lamps; and since then the image of an asian person from the viewpoint of America and its neighboring countries. The sad fact is, the actor playing the asian character is, in fact, an american actor, Mickey Rooney, playing this bucktooth, slanted and squinty eyes, heavy accented asian person...

from the movie breakfast at tiffany's

How..... stereotypical

Socially Nude (Part I)

Socially Nude

- The ballad literature of series of complaints regarding technology

Greg & Sam

Technology has shortened the distance between oceans, the world have finally come to an era where distance is no longer an issue: computer chat softwares, web cams, mobile communications, blackberry messenger, and the infamous iphone. One might think that the absence of distance is a good thing, yet it has brought a detrimental effect to this so-called 'comfort'. The current discomfort are, as follows:

Privacy is the quality of being secluded from the presence or view of others or the desire to condition themselves to conceal or being hidden. The irony in terms of privacy is that, we champion so dearly that it almost seemed like we always want to be secluded and we hear things in TV or just in general social occasions, "CAN'T YOU RESPECT MY PRIVACY?!" or "CAN'T YOU GIVE ME SOME F**** SPACE!"

Yet the very same people who says those things, frequently, also has a facebook account that permits people to see his/her pictures (that anyone can save), location, school, current school, and (the best part) personal INFORMATION. What we're trying to say is (wetellitlikeitis) that we allow ourselves to be socially nude while simultaneously desire to be closed and secluded. In lament terms, WHAT THE F*** DO WE REALLY WANT?

First we complain that the communication delay (lag) is not enough, and at times it seemed like its never enough, but now it is overwhelming.

"Privacy vs. transparency: By the sharing of information, a relationship can grow closer and stronger. However, this need for self-disclosure conflicts with the need for privacy felt by each individual in the relationship. When these needs are at odds with one another, a relational tension is created over how much disclosure is desirable." (Baxter & W.K Rawlins, 1988)

Online journalism

Online Journalism is about writing news articles that are posted on the internet. These articles need to be original, meaning there should be no space for plagiarism. Information needs to be researched by oneself afterward written down.

The competition concerning news posts in online journalism is very strict, since reporters need to compete with their speed and accuracy. They value each and every minute of their time.

Reporters working for online media are obliged to be capable of multitasking, such as having the ability to write, showing some skills in photography, knowing how to brows the net, and being able to post their news. It is also necessary for them to be able to work under pressure; since they have to face deadlines for each and every news coverage. Last but not least, online journalists need to be aware and understand the standards of journalism.

The length of the articles needs to be short in connected to other related news articles. Research says, people only endure reading news on the internet for three minutes per visit. Each day, an individual reads online news up to 3-5 times during certain periods of time. This means that the reporters need to be prepared with a number of news so that the consumers are satisfied.

Page views and visitors are two important factors that an online journalist needs to be concerned about. Page views determine the value of banner advertisements. This means to say that the higher the number of page views, the higher the value of the banner advertisement. Thus, writing short, interesting and interrelated articles becomes the way of increasing page views. The most accurate tool for an online site, including news sites is called google analytics.

Today, in the prosumer era, web 2.0, every individual is a consumer that can also be an information producer that is actively exchanging information. Online journalists are no different than other media journalists. They still have to follow the code of conduct and the main media laws.

The SPIRIT of Pink Floyd -- Not Pink Floyd

Gonzo Journalism

-Greg & Samantha

"Is there anybody out there?" would've been the perfect opening song for the concert, due to the lacking of audience in the concert. Was it a success? Well, it's up to you to decide, as WE TELL IT LIKE IT IS.

In the weeks prior to the event of "the spirit of pink floyd," in Jakarta, 28th 2010, in Kempinski Hotel Indonesia, Grand Ballroom; posters were roaming all over the walls of Grand Indonesia, which was the main sponsor of the event, and the first thought that came into everyone's head was, "OH MY GOD, THEY'RE COMING!!!! WOW!" and the second thing everyone did was to pre-order the tickets. For those who utilized the internet, it was obvious that the band coming was not the legendary PINK FLOYD, but it was a tribute band from England; but others who did not do their research, were holding to the hopes that they would witness a monumental experience on stage with visual effects and a tall stage, with a mesmerizing performance by the legendary members (or what's left of them) of the actual band. On the contrary, they were absolutely, positively, 'dazed & confused' by the fact that the hopes of seeing the old and original members with white hair, and aged exteriors transformed into young men and women, replacing the 'hope'. Apparently, the fact was, it was a TRIBUTE show.

"Who are these guys?" asked one of the confused audience, old at age, sitting in the back row.
"Are these guys the original, they look so..... young?" another one of the confused audience muttered.

The journey, however, was quite intriguing:
1. Finding the parking spot was no picnic, as it was a Saturday night, and the parking was in a mall/hotel
2. Upon entering the premises, one has to go through a thorough security protocol
3. The waiting quarters was intimidating; crowded, hotel style design, it was visually expensive
4. Like any other event in Indonesia, the event was drastically delayed for an hour
5. The enactment of the event, however.....

inquiry:

- The show had 3 types of seatings or rather three pricing sets
      - Silver: 300 thousand idr
      - Gold: 600 thousand idr
      - Platinum (VIP): 1 million idr

If the real Pink Floyd had shown up, the ticket would be twice or thrice as much

HI GUYS
Welcome to our blog,

Steve Jobs (CEO of Apple) once said, "If it's not Microsoft, it's Apple"

It's a random fact, but we tell it like it is.

Anyways, guys, this is our way of deflowering the first post of this blog, to give you a little taste of randomness, because this blog is a series of unfortunate randomness in a journalistic point-of-view, so don't worry, we're very credible people, and we are so capable of telling the truth.

We're here to educate you to TELL IT LIKE IT IS

We tell it like it is.
